>> The Best Halloween Games of 2026 New Scares, Cheap Scares and the All-Time Classics
The best Halloween games to play in 2026
The best games to play on Halloween 2026, ranked by players: new horror hits, cheap scary games for the Steam sale and the all-time classics.
Plus a word on the co-op party games your friends will ask for, and why the crowd is split on them.
No critic scores here. Every bar comes from duels: players pit games from their own Steam library against each other, and a game's beats-% is the share of a typical library it beats. 50% is dead average, 80% means it wins four duels out of five. The numbers are live, so they move as people keep duelling.
Best new horror games (2024 to 2026)
The last two years were a great run for horror, and the crowd agrees on where to start. Capcom and Konami, the two old houses of survival horror, are both back on top.
Resident Evil Requiem is the new one to beat. It lands right where the series lives at its best: tense, mean and impossible to put down, and it already sits above most of the games people own.
Silent Hill 2 is the remake that people were afraid would go wrong, and it didn't. If you have never been to Silent Hill, this is the door. Players who love it also rank Resident Evil 2 and 4 highly, so you know the company it keeps.
Silent Hill f takes the series to 1960s rural Japan and swaps the fog for red spider lilies. More action heavy than the remake, and the crowd puts it a step behind, but it is the most beautiful nightmare on this list.
Three smaller games that punch way above their price. Mouthwashing is a short, nasty story about a crew stranded in space, best played in one sitting. Look Outside is a horror RPG where you never leave your apartment block, and what's outside the window is the point. Crow Country is a love letter to 1990s survival horror, PS1 look and all, in an abandoned theme park.
Want something heavier? Hell is Us is less jump scare and more dread, a war-torn country with something wrong under it. Cronos: The New Dawn comes from the Silent Hill 2 remake studio and it shows: Polish brutalism, time travel and monsters that merge when you leave the bodies lying around. Only a handful of players have ranked it so far, so treat its bar as an early read.
One skip for now: Little Nightmares III has a rough start with our crowd, though so few people have ranked it that the verdict is far from final.
Cheap horror games that are still great
You don't need to pay full price for a good scare. Every game in this section is a few years old, regularly drops to a few dollars in Steam sales, and still beats most of the games in a typical library. Timing tip: Steam Scream Fest runs from October 26 to November 2, 2026, right across Halloween, so that week is the cheapest time of the year to fill up.
Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake are the best value in horror. Both are routinely on sale for well under $10, both are short enough to finish over a long weekend, and the crowd ranks them right alongside the new releases. RE7 is the scarier one: first person, a haunted Louisiana farmhouse and a family you will not forget.
Alien: Isolation is still the scariest game about being hunted ever made, and it is usually one of the cheapest things on sale every Halloween. SOMA trades the monster for a question you will think about for a week. Both are from 2014 and 2015 and neither has aged a day.
The indie trio. Inscryption looks like a creepy card game and then keeps changing into something else, go in blind. SIGNALIS is sci-fi horror in the style of classic survival horror, and its fans also love BioShock and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. DREDGE is the cozy one: a fishing game where the fish get stranger the further out you sail at night.
And two for a short budget. Cult of the Lamb is cute and spooky in equal measure, start a cult, sacrifice your followers, it's fine. Iron Lung costs less than a coffee and lasts about an hour in a tiny submarine on a sea of blood. It is the most effective hour of horror per dollar on Steam.
All-time favorite horror games
The classics. If you only play one game this Halloween and you have never played these, start here.
Resident Evil 4 is the all-time favorite, in both versions. The 2023 remake is one of the best loved games on the whole site, and the 2005 original still holds its own. The village, the chainsaws, the merchant: it is the most fun you will ever have being scared.
Dead Space is the other one everyone names. The crowd splits almost evenly between the 2008 original and the 2023 remake, which tells you that either is the right answer. Cut the limbs, not the head.
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is the cult classic of vampire Los Angeles, still unmatched for atmosphere, and its haunted hotel level is legendary. The Evil Within is the director of the original Resident Evil going full nightmare. Alan Wake is a Stephen King novel you play with a flashlight.
For something less stressful: Castlevania Dominus Collection brings the gothic Nintendo DS Castlevanias to Steam, BioShock is still the best horror shooter set in a city under the sea, and Plants vs. Zombies is the zombie game for the whole family, which is still exactly as good as you remember.
Halloween games to play with friends
The co-op horror games are where the crowd gets interesting. These are some of the most duelled games on the whole site, and they split players like nothing else:
Left 4 Dead 2, Lethal Company, Phasmophobia and R.E.P.O. all land around the middle of a typical library, with plenty of lovers and plenty of haters. The likely reason: a duel is one player weighing a game against their own library, alone, and these games are at their best with three friends screaming in voice chat. If you have a group, they are still the right pick for Halloween night. If you are playing solo, pick from the lists above.
